Hardeep Matharu is a journalist, writer, speaker and Editor-in-Chief of Byline Times – the independent investigative news site and monthly print news magazine covering what the papers don’t say.
She started her career as an award-winning local newspaper reporter and editor after completing a law degree at Cambridge University, and has more than a decade’s worth of experience working across regional, national and independent media. Her work focuses on the forces that shape us: identities, politics, culture and the media.
Hardeep is also a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, sits on the Board of the Values in the Media project, and is a judge of the annual Orwell Society/NUJ Young Journalists Award.

Hardeep Matharu is the Editor-in-Chief of Byline Times – the independent investigative news site and print news magazine that covers ‘what the papers don’t say’. She’s joining us at Brighton Summit for an afternoon session that explores the ways our cultural values are shaped by the media and the role of journalism in democracy and politics today.
After more than a decade working across regional, national and independent media, Hardeep believes that humanity is too often missing in our collective public life – and will talk about the tech platforms that open the door for new types of community and identity-creation; for good and for ill.
