We caught up with Brighton Summit sponsors EMW Law to find out who they are, what they do, and why they’ve chosen to get involved with this year’s Brighton Summit.

Tell us a bit about EMW Law

We’re a team with expertise in our business field, and we’re genuinely interested in yours. We offer all the services you’d expect a commercial law firm to; it’s how we do it that makes us distinctive.

We’re a business just like yours – we’ve been there and done it, which makes us good at speaking your language.  There’s something about each of us which makes us “so EMW”. We look after each other, so forming great external relationships with clients, contacts and others comes naturally to us.

We don’t take ourselves too seriously. Trying to enjoy the journey is something we hold dear and we want you to be part of that.

Great to have you on board for this year’s Brighton Summit! What prompted you to get involved?

We heard lots about it and loved the concept – we just wanted to be part of it! As commercial advisors, we’ve got a lot to offer, and our culture and entrepreneurialism bear a striking resemblance to the spirit that is the Brighton business community. We think the synergy is perfect, and couldn’t ignore the opportunity to join in with and help businesses in and around Brighton – the Summit is a great platform for doing that.

What does this year’s theme ‘Look Up’ mean to you?

Keeping an eye on the ‘bigger picture’, and where we’re going (not just where we are).  We’re all guilty of getting caught up in immediate details, forgetting to engage with others and not stopping to look over the horizon.

We live in a rapidly changing world, where businesses work hard to gain a competitive edge. It pays to Look Up from time to time – to get perspective and ensure you maximise the opportunities presenting themselves.

We’re talking from experience; we’ve seen the legal services market change a lot during the 25 years since we started. In that time we’ve relocated, rebranded twice, merged and opened two additional offices. If we didn’t Look Up, we wouldn’t be here today.

What are you most looking forward to on the day?

Meeting and getting to know new people and businesses in the area.

What are your top 3 tips for businesses when looking for a lawyer?

Chemistry – it’s important you feel comfortable that you can work with your lawyer.  They need to understand and share your aims and goals.

Be pragmatic and realistic when it comes to what you want them to do v/s budgetary constraints or what you are prepared to pay.

Think about their skill set – do they know the area they’re dealing with?  Are they a master of their area, or a jack of all trades?

What’s the best thing about doing business in and around Brighton?

The buzz, and the people.

Any news or last words to share with our readers?

We’ve got a collaborative working space at our office – if you’re ever at meetings in the Gatwick and Crawley area and need somewhere to work before or after (or just fancy a change of scenery for the day), then do pop in!

Thanks to EMW Law for writing this blog.
