A chance conversation in 2002 led Bert Williams to a twenty-year (and counting) project on Black History in Brighton & Hove. Framed by his own experiences of arriving in England aged 16 in 1960 from Jamaica, Brighton & Hove Black History maps the cultural heritage of our city, revealing an often-hidden past of the spaces and places that we see every day.
In conversation with Dara Jafari at Brighton Summit, Bert will tell us about his extensive research and work on Brighton & Hove Black History to promote racial equality, as well as his own personal story of emigrating to the UK. He’ll tell us how he met his wife, Shirley, moved to Brighton, plus some of the ups and downs of his career – from making biscuits in a factory, to working in the Royal Air Force and later the NHS.
